For many Filipino nurses working in the UK, the goal of settling permanently is a long-term aspiration. After years of service in the NHS or private healthcare, transitioning from a Health and Care Worker visa to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) becomes a crucial step toward stability, security, and eventually, British citizenship.
What is Indefinite Leave to Remain?
Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), or "settlement," is the key to making the UK your permanent home. It allows you to live, work, and study without time limits, access public funds, and eventually apply for British citizenship.
For many, ILR feels like the cherry on top after a meaningful journey as a skilled worker. It means no more visa renewals or restrictions—just the freedom to settle and move forward with your life and career in the UK.
Eligibility Requirements for Filipino Nurses
If you’re working in the UK under the Health and Care Worker visa, you may be eligible to apply for ILR after five years. Here's what you need to meet:
Five Years of Continuous Residence

To qualify, you must have lived in the UK for five consecutive years, with no more than 180 days of absence in any 12 months. The five years must be continuous, meaning there must have been no long breaks between jobs or visa status.
Salary Requirements

Nurses on the Shortage Occupation List are exempt from the usual salary threshold of £25,600. However, your salary must still meet the NHS pay scale or the going rate for your role, ensuring that you’re earning at least the required wage for your position.
English Language Proficiency

You’ll need to provide evidence of English proficiency at the B1 level (CEFR). If you used IELTS or OET for your initial visa, they may still be valid if taken within the last two years.

Life in the UK Test

You must pass the Life in the UK Test, which covers British history, customs, and values. The test costs £50 and can be taken at various locations across the UK. Once passed, you’ll receive a certificate to include in your ILR application. Book the test online here.
Proof of Employment

Your application will need to include evidence of your current employment, such as pay slips or an employment contract, showing that you’re still working in your role and that your services are still needed.
