The UK has officially ended its overseas social care recruitment route as of July 22, 2025. This visa previously allowed thousands of foreign caregivers—including many Filipinos—to work in adult care homes.
From now on, only those with degree-level qualifications (RQF 6) can qualify under the Skilled Worker visa. Entry-level caregiver roles (RQF 3) are no longer eligible. While current workers can stay, extend visas, or even settle until 2028, the door is now closed for new recruits.
Why the UK Made This Move
The decision comes after reports of exploitation in the care industry. Many migrant workers were burdened with debt or trapped in poor working conditions. The government now aims to focus on local recruitment and create safer, fairer jobs.
What This Means for Filipino Nursing Assistants
Fewer UK Opportunities – Those without nursing or degree-level credentials will find it almost impossible to enter the UK care sector.
Higher Bar for Skills – Nursing assistants may need to upskill or pursue a full nursing degree to compete under the new rules.
Time Limit for Current Workers – Those already in the UK can still work and even apply for settlement, but only until 2028.
Philippines’ Response – Back home, the new Caregivers’ Welfare Act (RA 11965) promises better protection, fair pay, and skills upgrading for caregivers—though overseas recruitment rules are still evolving.
For Filipino nursing assistants, the UK’s policy shift feels like a setback. But it’s also a wake-up call—invest in upskilling, demand fairer recruitment, and strengthen protections both abroad and at home.
